LAW ESTABLISHING THE COMMISSION

A Law to provide for the establishment, composition and functions of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission and for other matters connected with the elections to Local Government Councils in the State.

ABOUT US

In pursuant of the constitutional provision which grants States the power to set up their own independent Electoral body, Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) was established by Section 197 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and regulated by the provisions of AKISIEC Law 2000 which was replaced by AKISIEC Law 2003 and subsequently replaced and repealed by AKISIEC Law 2007, to among other things organise, undertake and supervise all elections to Local Government Councils within Akwa Ibom State. The commission therefore, is committed to conducting and delivering free, fair and credible elections at the grassroot, for a sustainable and unfettered democracy. The First Commission made up of a Chairman and six members was inaugurated by the then Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Victor Attah on 2nd January, 2001 for a five year tenure, followed by the second Commision in January, 2006, while the third Commission was inaugurated on the 2nd January, 2008 by the Former Governor, Obong (Barr.) Godswil Obot Akpabio. The Fourth and current Commission was inaugurated on 3rd January, 2013 with Mrs. Gloria E. Ukpong as chairman.

MISSION STATEMENT

To organize, undertake and supervise all elections to Local Government Councils within the State; To render such advice as it may consider necessary to the Independent National Electoral Commission on the compilation of the register of voters and to provide guidelines to political parties on electioneering campaigns, subject to the provisions of the relevant law on Local Government administration.

STATUTORY FUNCTIONS OF AKISIEC

The functions of AKISIEC as contained in Section 197 of the 1999 Constitution (As amended) and Section 10, Part II of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission Law 2007 (as amended) include the following:

To organize, undertake and supervise all elections to Local Government Councils within the State

To render such advice as it may consider necessary to the Independent National Electoral Commission on the compilation of the register of voters in so far as that register is applicable to Local Government Election in the State

To provide guidelines to political parties stipulating the rules and procedures for electioneering campaigns, subject to the provisions of the relevant law on Local Government Administration

Creation, delineation and delimitation of ward constituencies as provided by Law

To carry out such functions as may be conferred on it by Law

Akwa Ibom State has 329 Electoral Wards and 2,985 Polling Units
